User State Migration Tool 2.6 overview

Microsoft® Windows® User State Migration Tool (USMT) 2.6 can be used to migrate user files and settings during large deployments of Microsoft Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows XP Professional operating systems. USMT captures desktop, network, and application settings, as well as a user's files, and then migrates them to a new Windows installation. Using USMT can help to improve and simplify migration process. USMT can be used for both side-by-side and wipe-and-load migrations. If you are only upgrading your operating system, USMT is not needed.

 

USMT example scenarios

Type I. Wipe-and-load migration

First, the administrator migrates the user state from a source computer to an intermediate store. After installing the operating system, the administrator migrates the user state back to the source computer.

Type II. Side-by-side migration

First, the administrator migrates the user state from the source computer to an intermediate store. After installing the operating system on the destination computer, the administrator migrates the user state from the store to the destination computer.
