Samsung Shipped Infected Digital Picture Frames

For the second year in a row, some of those digital photo frames lying under the Christmas tree may come with a nasty surprise.

Samsung says that CDs that shipped with many models of its digital photo frames may have included a malicious Trojan horse program that gives cyber criminals access to the PC.

The malicious software, known as W32.Sality.AE lies in the XP version of Samsung's Frame Manager 1.08 software, which ships with many other models of Samsung frames.

A malware reaches a host PC only if Frame Manager is loaded from the CD, which can convert the digital photo frame to a USB monitor. It doesn't affect Windows Vista users. W32.Sality.AE has been known in the security community since April and is detected by antivirus software.

CDs with malicious code may have also shipped with the digital photo frame models SPF-75H, SPF-76H, SPF-85H, SPF-85P, SPF-105P, Samsung wrote in an alert (pdf) it issued in late November.

Samsung recommends users to download and install the updated version of Frame Manager XP software available from the Download Center at

Earlier this week, issued an alert saying the worm affects Amazon buyers of the SPF-85H 8-inch digital photo frames sold between October and December 2008 for about US$150.

The story was first reported by German publication PC Professionell earlier this month.

This is not the first time that viruses have shipped along side digital photo frames. Last year, retailer Best Buy Stores said it had sold digital picture frames that were contaminated with a computer virus. The digital picture frame was an in-house brand called Insignia, and that specific model with the virus was later discontinued by Best Buy.

Delhi Welcomes 3G

Delhi has become the first Indian city to officially go 3G with MTNL’s soft-launch of its 3G services, branded ‘Jadoo,’ in the capital. However, not the entire area of Delhi is being covered and only in some areas such as Connaught Place, Sanchar Bhavan, Rajaji Marg, India Gate, Pragati Maidan, Delhi gate and Minto Road can the service be accessed.
MTNL will not be charging anything extra right now but after the commercial launch, we can expect a new tariff plan to be revealed. A similar limited launch of 3G services is also expected in two months in Mumbai which would cover the areas between Prabhadevi and the airport. January will also see the services being launched in Chennai and further down the line in Kolkata.
MTNL will be adding an additional 15 lakh 3G lines in both Delhi and Mumbai. The introduction of this technology will also help the under-fire security agencies by helping the process of public surveillance. MTNL will be integrating close-circuit camera technology with 3G for surveillance with the help of Wi-Fi devices or mobiles.

The technology knowhow differences among DVD, VCD and SVCD

There are several factors to consider in choosing an output format for your project. These include your desired output quality, target playback device, and viewing screen size, among others. Here are the advantages and disadvantages that picking each output format entails:

dvd images Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) is popular in video production because of its quality. Not only does it guarantee superb audio and video quality, it can also hold several times more data than VCDs and SVCDs. DVDs make use of the MPEG-2 format, which has a much bigger file size than MPEG-1, and can likewise be produced as single or dual-sided, and single and dual-layered. They can be played on stand-alone DVD players or on the DVD-ROM drive of your PC.

Video Compact Disc (VCD) is a special version of a CD-ROM that uses the MPEG-1 format. The quality of the exported movie is almost the same, but usually better than VHS tape-based movies. A VCD can be played back on a CD-ROM drive, VCD player, and even on a DVD player.

Super Video CD (SVCD) is commonly described as an enhanced version of VCD. It is based on MPEG-2 technology with Variable Bit Rate (VBR) support. The typical running time of an SVCD is about 30-45 minutes. Although you could extend this to 70 minutes, you will have to compromise sound and image quality. SVCDs can be played back on stand-alone VCD/SVCD players, most DVD players, and all CD-ROM/DVD-ROM with a DVD/SVCD player software.

What XP Antivirus does:

This is a slight background info, skip to complete removal steps of XP Antivirus 2008.

imageXP Antivirus 2008, XP Antivirus 2009, and XPAntiVirus are scoundrel (oops! can there be a better word then this) antivirus programs, when run, display false results as a tactic to scare you into purchasing the software. Older versions of XP Antivirus would create 9 entries in your Windows Registry that impersonate infections on your machine, according to In reality, though, these registry entries were harmless and had absolutely no effect on your computer. Instead, these entries were set so that XP AntiVirus can find them when scanning your computer and report them as infections. The newer of versions of the program , such as XP Antivirus 2008 and XP Antivirus 2009, instead just display false results when scanning your computer that state infections were found. In order to remove these fake infections, though, you would first need to purchase the software as the trial does not allow you to remove them.

While running, XP Antivirus will also display fake alerts stating that you are infected or under attack from some type of threats. These alerts are fake and can be ignored. If you do click on the alert, though, it will prompt you to purchase the software. Examples of text contained in these alerts can be found below.

    Google Chrome Password Manager Slammed

Google's Chrome and Apple's Safari browsers could do a better job of protecting passwords, according to a security researcher who released a study of browser password managers.

"Safari and Chrome are essentially tied for the worst password manager built into a major web browser," said Robert Chapin, president of Chapin Information Services, in his report, which looked at the types of security checks browsers used to make sure that they were sending username and password information to legitimate websites instead of clever hackers.
Two years ago Chapin reported a widely publicised password manager flaw in the Firefox browser, rated critical by Mozilla developers. The bug was used by attackers on the website who had set up a fake login page to steal account information from users of the social-networking site.

Firefox has now done a lot to improve its password manager, but all of these products are still far from perfect, Chapin said. "Should everyone put 100 percent implicit trust in every password manager?" he asked. "Not at all."

One problem is that today's password managers can be tricked into submitting different password credentials to different parts of the same website. That's what hackers did with the MySpace attack, posting a fake password entry form on a MySpace page. Because both the fake and real login forms were on the domain, browsers like Firefox could be tricked into automatically sending login information to the fraudsters. That bug has been fixed in Firefox now, but Chrome and Safari are still vulnerable to similar attacks. Another problem is that browsers will send passwords meant for one domain, for example, to another domain - say - without warning the user, he said. That's because browser makers assume that the page asking for the password should be trusted, even if it is sending the password to another domain, he said.

Chapin says he uses the Opera password manager because it does a better job of letting him save passwords for specific web pages. He has posted an online test where users can test the security of their own password managers.

Robert Hansen, CEO of web security consultancy SecTheory, said that the security community has known for several years now that browser password managers are unsafe. This is mainly because the browsers themselves are vulnerable to so many different types of attack. "They aren't a great idea from a security perspective once they are integrated into the browser," he said via instant message. "The browser itself isn't designed to stop a large chunk of exploits that enable password manager theft. Without those exploits, password manager hacks wouldn't work."

Microsoft Releases Open-Source Content Management App

Microsoft has released an early version of an open-source content management platform that developers can use to build sophisticated blogs or large Web sites.

Called Oxite, its creators describe it as a standards-compliant and highly extensible content management platform. They built it not because there is a need for another blog engine, but because they were building the MIX Online site for Web designers and wanted to offer an example of a use for ASP.NET MVC, according to the Oxite Web site.

ASP.NET MVC lets developers use ASP.NET to build Web applications using an architecture called model-view-controller. Microsoft released a preview of the ASP.NET MVC framework, designed to make it easier for developers to test applications, late last year.

Oxite includes a number of important blog functions that can be complex to implement, according to Microsoft. The framework offers many features common in blogs, including pingbacks, trackbacks, anonymous or authenticated comments with the option to moderate comments, RSS feeds for any page and a Web administration panel.

It's also designed for users to easily add new Web pages and sub-pages.

At first glance Oxite appears to compete with established blogging products including those from Six Apart. However, Microsoft says that Oxite is designed for developers, rather than less-technical Web users wanting to set up a blog.

"Oxite is targeted at developers who want to learn ASP.NET MVC," according to a brief FAQ on the Oxite site. "If the community decides to build this to work well for consumers down the road we won't stop it."

The Oxite Web site calls this a sample, or alpha release. The code was posted on Friday and had been downloaded by 300 people late Monday afternoon. The MIX Online site is the only one listed so far among sites using the Oxite code base.

Microsoft to Offer web-Based Word and Excel

Microsoft plans to make most of its Office software - including Word and Excel - available online. Web-hosted apps, also known as 'Software-as-a-Service' (SaaS), allow users to benefit from lower initial prices for the programs, as the apps are hosted online and don't need to be downloaded to computers.

Stephen Elop, president of Microsoft's business division, told Reuters: "What we think is in five years, 50 percent of the use of Exchange and Sharepoint could be serviced from the cloud." "Between now and then, a year or two or whatever, if it's going to be tough economic times, that means we expect quite a lot of movement in that direction, a lot of people taking advantage of that," he added.

"I think the economy will help it." Microsoft's online offerings will directly compete with Google's web-services such as Google Docs, as well as Google Calendar, Gmail email and instant messaging. Microsoft wouldn't confirm exactly which services would be made available on the web but revealed they would be rolled out as early as 2009.

Nokia to use Linux in More Mobile Phones

Nokia is considering using Linux software on some of its handsets.
According to vice president Ukko Lappalainen the software would be viable for use on its top-of-the-range devices, which currently use Symbian software on its mobile phones and Linux maemo with its internet-tablets including the N810.
Lappalainen told Reuters: "In the longer perspective, Linux will become a serious alternative for our high-end phones".
However, Lappalainen revealed that Nokia would develop its own Linux software rather than opting for Android - Google's Linux-based platform.
"I don't see anything in Android which would make it better than Linux maemo."

    Microsoft Launches iPhone App

Microsoft has launched an app for Apple's iPhone. Seadragon Mobile is free to download from Apple's iTunes App Store and gives users the ability to access online photo libraries either using the phone's 3G or Wi-Fi connection.

These include images available of Microsoft's Photosynth site, which allows users to stitch together hundred of digital photographs to create a 3D image that can then be looked at from all angles, or even viewed in close-up detail.

The apps also offers an RSS feed so users can be notified when new content is made available.

Microsoft Live Labs group product manager Alex Daley said "The iPhone is the most widely distributed phone with a (graphics processing unit). Most phones out today don't have accelerated graphics in them. The iPhone does and so it enabled us to do something that has been previously difficult to do. I couldn't just pick up a BlackBerry or a Nokia off the shelf and build Seadragon for it without GPU support".

System Configuration utility for Windows Vista Customization I

click to zoom: system-configurations System Configuration is an advanced tool that can help identify problems that might prevent Windows from starting correctly. You can start Windows with common services and startup programs turned off and then turn them back on, one at a time. If a problem does not occur when a service is turned off, but does occur when turned on, then the service could be the cause of the problem.

System Configuration is intended to find and isolate problems, but it is not meant as a startup management program. To permanently remove or turn off programs or services that run at startup, see Uninstall or change a program. This article is taken from Help and Support section of Windows Vista. Please, read the next post System Configuration utility for Windows Vista Customization II, if you are looking for detail help on diagnostic tools and enabling- disabling UAC.

The following table describes the tabs and options that are available in System Configuration:

General : Lists choices for startup configuration modes:

    • Normal startup. Starts Windows in the usual manner. Use this mode to start Windows after you are done using the other two modes to troubleshoot the problem.

    • Diagnostic startup. Starts Windows with basic services and drivers only. This mode can help rule out basic Windows files as the problem.

    • Selective startup. Starts Windows with basic services and drivers and the other services and startup programs that you select.

Boot: Shows configuration options for the operating system and advanced debugging settings, including:

    • Safe boot: Minimal. Boots to the Windows graphical user interface (Windows Explorer) in safe mode running only critical system services. Networking is disabled.

    • Safe boot: Alternate shell. Boots to the Windows Command Prompt in safe mode running only critical system services. Networking and the graphical user interface are disabled.

    • Safe boot: Active Directory repair. Boots to the Windows graphical user interface in safe mode running critical system services and Active Directory.

    • Safe boot: Network. Boots to the Windows graphical user interface in safe mode running only critical system services. Networking is enabled.

    • No GUI boot. Does not display the Windows splash screen when booting.

    • Boot log. Stores all information from the boot process in the file %SystemRoot%Ntbtlog.txt.

    • Base video. Boots to the Windows graphical user interface in minimal VGA mode. This loads standard VGA drivers instead of display drivers specific to the video hardware on the computer.

    • OS boot information. Shows driver names as drivers are being loaded during the boot process.

    • Make all boot settings permanent. Does not track changes made in System Configuration. Options can be changed later using System Configuration, but must be changed manually. When this option is selected, you cannot roll back your changes by selecting Normal startup on the General tab.

Services: Lists all of the services that start when the computer boots, along with their current status (Running or Stopped). Use the Services tab to enable or disable individual services at boot time to troubleshoot which services might be contributing to boot problems.

Select Hide all Microsoft services to show only third-party applications in the services list. Clear the check box for a service to disable it on your next boot. If you have chosen Selective startup on the General tab, you must either choose Normal startup on the General tab or select the service’s check box to start it again at boot time.

Strongly Cautioned : Disabling services that normally run at boot time might cause some programs to malfunction or result in system instability. Do not disable services in this list unless you know they are not essential to your computer’s operation. Selecting Disable all will not disable some secure Microsoft services required for the operating system to start.

Startup: Lists applications that run when the computer boots, along with the name of their publisher, the path to the executable file, and the location of the registry key or shortcut that causes the application to run.

Clear the check box for a startup item to disable it on your next boot. If you have chosen Selective startup on the General tab, you must either choose Normal startup on the General tab or select the startup item’s check box to start it again at boot time.

If you suspect an application has been compromised, examine the Command column to review the path to the executable file.

Strongly Cautioned: Disabling applications that normally run at boot time might result in related applications starting more slowly or not running as expected

Tools: Provides a convenient list of diagnostic tools and other advanced tools that you can run.

Service Pack2 (SP2) Beta for Windows Server 2008, Vista Available

Microsoft gave its MSDN and TechNet subscribers access to the beta of Service Pack 2 for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 and will make the software available to the general public in a few days from now. The beta includes all the hot fixes that have been released since SP1, which shipped in March. Also included are some new features for corporate users including full integration of Hyper-V into Windows Server 2008.

Microsoft shipped a beta of SP2 in October to a small group of users in its Technology Adoption Program. This week, Microsoft is opening up the testing and plans to release the software next year. "We are tracking to ship Windows Vista SP2 in the first half of 2009," Mike Nash, corporate vice president for Windows product management, announced on the Vista Team blog. The release will come ahead of Windows 7, which some speculate could ship by the end of 2009. Microsoft's official timeframe is Jan. 2010.
The Hyper-V integration includes one free guest license for users of Windows Server 2008 Standard, four free licenses for users of the Enterprise version and an unlimited number of licenses for the DataCenter version.

SP2 also includes the ability to configure power management policies via Group Policy, and improved backward compatibility for older Terminal Server license keys that are only 512 bytes. Other improvements include the addition of Windows Search 4.0; the Bluetooth 2.1 Feature Pack that supports the most recent specification for Bluetooth technology; the ability to record data on to Blu-Ray media natively in Windows Vista; the inclusion of Windows Connect Now (WCN) to simplify Wi-Fi configuration; and the enablement of the exFAT file system to support UTC timestamps, which allows correct file synchronization across time zones. Users must have SP1 installed before installing SP2 and need to have loaded the update to the Windows servicing stack.

Expert Questions Windows 7 User Interface

In Microsoft's quest to simplify the Windows 7 user interface, they're actually making it harder to use. So argues Windows expert Paul Thurrott on his SuperSite for Windows blog. Thurrott, the author of Windows Vista Secrets, based his observations on pre-beta releases.

In a blog post, Thurrott first explains the difference between simple and easy, using the iPhone's lack of a Back button as an example. One less button, either as hardware or as a touch screen icon, makes the iPhone simpler. But if you click on a Web link in an email, examine the resulting page, then want to return to the original message, it's definitely not easier.

The Windows 7 user interface, according to Thurrott, abounds with similar problems. For instance, in order to simplify the taskbar, Microsoft has eliminated the Quick Launch Toolbar. If you want the convenience of launching favorite programs from the taskbar, you "can simply mix and match shortcuts (for applications, documents and folder locations) with buttons that represent open windows." But the resulting taskbar doesn't make the distinction between launchable shortcuts and running windows clear.

Other examples include difficulties with the new Jump List feature, and a default setting that hides all systray icons. In related news, Microsoft announced that it will distribute full beta copies of Windows 7 at its Microsoft Developer Conferences running from December 9 to February 19. Text from

Facebook, Google Launch Data Portability Programs to All

Google and Facebook separately announced the general availability of their respective data portability program. Google Friend Connect and Facebook Connect are generally designed to extend social-networking capabilities broadly across the Web.

In the real world, this means making it possible for people to use their previously created Google and Facebook accounts to sign in to other Web sites that accept them. That way, people don't have to create an account for every Web site that requires one, reducing the number of log-in details they need to remember. MySpace's Data Availability Initiative has a similar mission.

These programs also aim to let people port elsewhere content they have entered into Google, Facebook and MySpace, like profile information, photos, notes, list of contacts, comments, status updates and the like. In its announcement, Google said Friend Connect is now available to any Web site publisher and that the social features available can be added by copying and pasting snippets of code, so advanced technical knowledge isn't necessary. To access Friend Connect features on a Web site, people can log in using not only their account information from Google but also from Yahoo, AOL and the industry standard OpenID, Google said.

Meanwhile, Facebook urged its users to contact their favorite Web sites and encourage them to implement Facebook Connect, which is already running on places like Citysearch, CNN's The Forum and CBS' The Insider. "Obviously our launch partners don't cover all the websites you use on a daily basis, so if you want to see this list grow, get in touch with your favorite websites, developers, and services, and tell them you want to connect. With your help, we can all share more information across the web," wrote Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a blog posting.

Bluetooth 2.2 Specifications to Be Revealed Next Year

The specifications for the new version of Bluetooth technology- Bluetooth 2.2 will be revealed sometime in mid-2009. This was announced by the consortium of companies that form the technology’s Special Interest Group.

According to the SIG, Bluetooth 2.2 will enable wireless video streaming, printing and other Wi-Fi related tasks. It will also meant that faster speeds than that under v1.1 can be achieved. It is expected that Bluetooth 10x devices will be released first followed by Bluetooth 100x, which if used along with Ultra Wide Broadband radio, may be able to give 480mbps of data transfer speed. Bluetooth 10x is expected to give better performance in Wi-Fi devices and this will be pretty useful especially in portable media players.

The new iPod Touch 2G has a Bluetooth chip embedded in it but it has not yet been activated. Once the final specifications are released, we can expect Apple to release the update to enable Bluetooth 2.2 services.

Hackers Port Linux Kernel to IPhone

If you know one thing about Linux users, it's probably this: they enjoy the challenge of installing their operating system of choice on pretty much anything with a transistor in it. It's only a matter of time before they get around to replacing all those electronic singing greeting cards to make the sound of penguin mating calls.

So the news that Linux has been ported to the iPhone and the iPod touch shouldn't exactly come as a shock; please hold your cries of heresy until the end. OpeniBoot, which brings the Linux 2.6 kernel to the iPhone platform was developed by members of the iPhone DevTeam, the same folks who have long been working on cracking the iPhone's firmware every time a new version comes out.

The capabilities of OpeniBoot are still incredibly limited--at present, there's no support for writing to the flash memory, using the touch screen, wireless networking, the cell phone, sound, or the accelerometer. So if you thought that you'd be ending up with a fully operational Linux iPhone--or even a partially operational phone--I'm afraid you're going to be disappointed for now.

There's also some talk that this may pave the way for installing Google's Android OS on the iPhone, though as someone who's been using a G1 for a few days now, that seems like overhauling a Porsche to run like a Hyundai. But then again, there's always somebody who wants to prove that it's possible.

MIME Types - a brief intro

Mime types tell browsers how to handle specific extensions. For example, the text/html mime type equates to .htm, .html, and .shtml extensions on most servers, and this tells your browser to interpret all files with those extensions as HTML files. You can alter or add new mime types specifically for your site (note that you can not alter the system defined mime type values). MIME types are often used to handle new technologies as they appear. When WAP technology first appeared no one had these extensions set up on their server. With mime types, however, you could have set it up yourself and begun serving WAP pages immediately.

    What Are Mime Types?

MIME Types tell browsers how to handle specific file extensions. For example, the text/html MIME Types equates to .htm, .html, and .shtml extensions on most servers, telling your browser to interpret all files with those extensions as HTML files. You can alter or add new MIME Types specifically for your site (Note: You cannot alter the system defined MIME Types values). MIME Types are often used to handle new technologies as they appear.

Mime Types can be compared to file extensions on your computer operating system. File extensions tell the operating system how to handle the file and what to open, run or view the file with. However, in the case of Mime Types, it tells the web server that is hosting the file what type of file it is and what to use to open, run or view the file with. Sometimes within the users web browser or e-mail application.

Why Would I Add More Mime Types?

In some instances you may have a file that is not already recognized by the web server. This in turn would mean that the web server will not know how to serve this file to the user. This can result in unexpected behavior. Adding a file extension relationship to a Mime Type will identify that type of file to the web server and what the web server should use so that the user can open, run or view the file on the web server through the application (such as a web browser).

What Kind of Files Do We Mean?

Some examples of Mime Types once they are added are:

Nikon reveals Expensive and powerful new SLR

With a 24.5 megapixel sensor that covers ISO 50-6400, Nikon’s new DSLR camera- the D3x, has got quite a number of ‘cameraphiles’ salivating. Maybe it’s the fact that the camera can shoot 5 frames per second at full resolution or just that since its presence was leaked a while ago, the D3x has been much awaited; but we expect this camera to make quite a buzz once it actually hits the markets.

According to a release issued by Nikon, the D3x can record images as TIFF, JPEG or the RAW format, NEF in either 12 or 14 bit compressed or uncompressed formats. The release goes on to say that the camera also features Scene Recognition System, which continuously analyzes information from the 1,005-pixel RGB light sensor, to refine auto exposure, auto white balance and autofocus calculations. Nikon's 3D Color Matrix Metering II helps ensure accurate exposures and when used in combination with Active D-Lighting, it creates realistic contrast while compensating for lost shadows and highlights.

The D3x is expected to be launched this month and will cost a cool $8,000 (Rs.3,92,638).

    HDTV: frequently asked questions

What do I need to connect my computer to an HDTV?
That depends on your television. Some HDTV sets can connect to a standard VGA cable, which is the most common connection for computers. If your television does not have a VGA input, though, you may need to use a DVI cable or component video cables. If your computer does not have these video outputs, you might be able to replace the video card in your computer with a newer, HDTV-compatible video card.
After connecting my computer to an HDTV, the display is stretched. How can I fix it?
You need to change the resolution settings using Display in Control Panel. Because most HDTV sets use the 16:9 format, you need to choose a screen resolution that matches the wide format of the TV. If your computer's video card has been designed with HDTV in mind, it might come with its own software for setting screen resolution to match the 16:9 format.
Can I connect a computer to both a monitor and an HDTV at the same time?
Yes. If your computer's video card is HDTV-compatible, it will probably have two or more video outputs. Connect one to your computer monitor and another to your HDTV. Both of them should automatically display what's on your computer.

After connecting my computer to an HDTV, why can't I see certain windows on my computer monitor anymore?
This is normal. Certain kinds of computer information, such as games and video, will only appear on the HDTV. You will see a blank screen or a blank window on the computer monitor. To see this information on the computer monitor, you must temporarily disconnect the HDTV.

For more help, please refer to the manufacturer supplied documentation or the Windows Help and Support where this information resides.
